The NINTENDO NINVENTORY - a new model from Jibmums in - what?? - 2025??!!

Post by jibmums Verified »

It's my 500th post, yay! I wanted to save it for something special, so here it is!

Anyone here who uses my pinball skins know what a perfectionist I am concerning accuracy and sharp artwork, so for my first foray into 3d modeling, I wanted to remodel several existing older cabs from scratch, using more detailed geometry and higher resolution textures. With that I present the Nintendo Ninventory - 16 cabs, several of them never before modelled, representing Nintendo's well-known (and some not so well-known) early 80's lineup.

While I'm all for more and better detail, I have the highest respect for Peter's initial run of models when he released 3dArcade. Then the "diet" models of Baraka and Pariah gave us numerous cabs designed to be simple and efficient, but I found the lack of detail and accuracy in both the geometry and the textures to be disappointing. I figured the faster computers and graphics cards of today were now equipped to handle a more "high definition" model. So, much time has been spent scrubbing the images used, and in many cases creating them from scratch, as there were no usable textures for the more obscure games like Radar Scope and Helifire.

Image

First up we have Radar Scope, two versions of Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior and Donkey Kong II: Jumpman Returns. The red Donkey Kong cabinet represents the earliest run of 2000 machines, which were actually Radar Scopes converted over to DK because they were such a flop. Donkey Kong II is a romhack for existing DK machines, and an artwork package and paint codes were available to convert the cabinet to what you see here.

Image

Next we have Donkey Kong 3 and Mario Brothers. These were both conversion kits, and so could be found in any of three colors: light blue (converted from a dedicated Donkey Kong or a Popeye), orange (converted from a Donkey Kong Junior), or red (converted from a Radar Scope or a Donkey Kong that was originally a Radar Scope). They're each a different model so you can have all three colors in the same arcade.

Lastly, there's Helifire, Popeye and the Nintendo Vs. Unisystem Conversion Kit. Helifire is a very early Nintendo game with a cabinet that's slightly different than the rest of the lineup. The Vs. conversion cabs are available in light blue, orange and red, depending on which game they were converted from, just like Mario and DK3. Personally, I got tired of having a row of Vs. games that were all light blue!

New marquees will be included with each model, as I've spiffed up each one to remove artifacting and color-corrected them (and, in the case of Radar Scope, Helifire and DK3, created them from scratch). I've got some final tweaking to do but they should all be available soon. There are actually two other Nintendo games that didn't make it into the Ninventory, Space Firebird and Sky Skipper, because I couldn't find ANY images for either, except the marquees. I believe Sky Skipper was a Japan-only release anyway. If you come across a Space Firebird, please take lots of pix; it uses the same cabinet design as Helifire and it would be nice to have those two side-by-side.

Thanks go to Fossil and Btribble for the modeling help, and CamaroMurph from the KLOV website for his Helifire photos.

Happy 500th, you verbose bastard!

Well, that is thorough, I have to say. When does this bounty unfold?

Also, a quick question. There were (at least) 2 different marquees for Mario Brothers, with and without the "2-player feature" bubble, weren't there? In all of your research, is there any pattern as to which marquee might go with which cab version(s)?
Let me introduce you to my friend Manuel...now open Manuel to page 6.

Yep, "2-Player Feature" is for the conversion cab, and is the marquee I'm including with the model. Standard "Mario Bros." marquee is for the dedicated MB model, which is a different shape & larger size than these Nintendo cabs.

I don't frequent this particular corner of the internet too much these days, as I haven't been in a retro-gaming phase for some time, but I feel compelled to congratulate you upon this dazzling selection of beauties. Always nice to have an 'out with the old, in with the new' session, and I look forward to grabbing these when they become available. Nice work, well done.

Great post. Thanks to everyone for all the hard work. Glad to see the multi colored VS cabs. I also hated having 10 blue cabs in a row.

Thanks! It's been over a year, I really need to finish them up and release them one of these days. Maybe after I'm finished with the Stern project.

ha! Well until then we have the nice screenshots to look at.

BTW - another possible game for this cabinet, the little known (until recently?) 1982 Tobikomi game "Fix-It Felix Jr" which appears to be a Nintendo cab conversion. :D

Some news about the Ninventory: SuperUlly from the KLOV and DragonsLairFans forums has provided me with scans of the instruction stickers and cp for.....drum roll please....SPACE FIREBIRD! I never thought I would be able to complete the Ninventory but but now I can, yay! So that, along with some Nintendo measurements I'm going to be taking soon, will drag this project back out of the closet. It ain't gonna happen soon, I have other things to finish first like the Taito Gen 1's....but it is gonna happen.

I never thought I'd be able to say this, but Space Firebird is done! Here's a close-up shot of the control panel and instruction sticker area:

Image

The instruction sheet on the CP is, in all likelihood, inaccurate. I had three sources to use: the flyer picture, images of the stickers/instructions from a cocktail cabinet, and photos of Ully's upright with all the wording in German. The German machine has a text-only CP sheet, and a second sticker with scoring info next to the blue one. The flyer shows only the blue sticker, and, from what I can tell as the picture is rather small, a CP sheet with the scoring info on it. So this instruction sheet is conjectural, but it's very similar to other early Nintys like Helifire and Radar Scope, so this is how it shall remain.

Now the million dollar question: I did all my model work on the Ninventory way back before I started measuring actual cabinets for accuracy, thus they've all been eyeball-engineered (but as accurately as I possibly could). I have every intention of finding and measuring a real Ninty cabinet, but who knows when that will be. So I can do one of two things, either wait until I gather said measurements and revamp and then release the entire package, or release everything now and then make a more accurate version 2 available at some future point. What would you guys prefer?
